Some people might call me a grumpy old-head for my opinions about a lot of creative works in general, but sometimes I feel I enjoy music and art in a deeper level then most—or maybe because I see a lot wrong under the American Capitalist system and how it effects art. But, there are trends that I can't get behind not because it's not a style I like, but because its something about its lack of creativity, and that kills me. I'm gonna talk about a few of my random gripes here.

  1. A lot of fan art made for the sake of pop culture reference by an artist. If I see an artist mostly does fan art for other's characters as simple ""pin-ups"", its often that I get bored of their work if it's just the characters just standing around for most of 'em. If you have no orignal works, I see this as you lacking creativity.
  2. The loudness war in music. Please learn to not heavy compress your dynamics until the peaks of your loud, punchy drums don't even go above the rest of the waveform, punchy drums are suppose to be louder than the backing guitar, not cut off at the same db roof—not a hard rule for all drums, but for most hard hitting ones it is very much recommended. I might even be at fault for bad mixxing, but I don't even master my Tracker music.
  3. Beepbox is kind of annoying. I get it, it is a useful tool, but the culture of web-browser dependence is very limiting when it comes to software development, so the usefulness of the music app is cut in 1/10th of normal software. Thurm64's Pandoras Box tries to mimic Music Trackers by having custom samples, but its internet connection dependence is just awful for artists—plus you can't do anything with the samples other than play them. The music that uses Beepbox's non-chiptune drums just sound boring to me, the preset sound too roomy. With the drums being the default, the overuse leads me to actively dislike them. I don't hate songs that use use Beepbox clones, because some true gems can be made with them, but maybe it shouldn't be the end-all-be-all of music making for hobbyists. I encourage people to learn Milkytracker, OpenMPT, or Tildearrow's Furnace instead.
  4. Abusing a non-groovy beat (a song without a clear time-feel, or dance-flow) in a Breakcore song. A lot of new Breakcore artists just don't understand what made 2000s Breakcore good—and even newer Breakcore and Dancecore music good—and just turn the Amen break super fast. Venetian Snares and CDR understands how to make a groove with super fast drum chopping and programming, many new artists don't. Read Em's article: pop speedcore rhythm theory: something for everybody, it's really useful to think about sub rhythms in Extreme Hardcore.
  5. This is only relevant to Youtube: almost every reaction channels suck, just period. just make commentary videos after you have watched the videos. This also applies to streamers who do the same thing. All they do is add nothing to whatever they watch, and if you wanted to share something, just make a playlist, or a web-page somewhere to do so.
  6. Social media as a whole turns people uncreative, and teenagers depressed. It is almost like all social media was made for greedy profit, and to manipulate people into using the modern feed 'for you' algorithm. Not even the fed versions of websites like Instagram (pixelfed) is any good in its website site design and functions.

That's it I suppose, that's all my complaining done. I hope this doesn't discourage anyone from stopping their work here on Newgrounds, because you can learn and grow as an artist. Do other people view my reviews as harsh, and should I learn to just shut-up? Anyway, good day to all!
